Image Comics: Age of Auteurism

“You’re not a real geek if you don’t read comic books.”

If I had a dollar for every time this sentiment, or something like it, has been spat at a female geek by some ignoramus, I could retire in style and have enough left to form a kick-ass, “let’s get more girls in STEM” charity. There’s nothing geeks love more than to accuse some newbie of not knowing the secret handshake (see: #Gamergate). So, I’m hear to say it, loud and proud: I am a geek, and I do not read comic books!

Except… now I kind of do. And it’s all because of the stellar, creator-driven output of Image Comics.

First, let’s backtrack a bit. It’s not that I’ve never, ever read any comic books in my life. I had a brief flirtation with Wonder Woman in the late ’80s. I remember a Twilight Zone-like horror comic that I picked up at random at the library and which scarred me for life (seriously, I remember every suffocating panel of that thing). A few years ago, I read an article on Alan Moore and decided to finally read Watchmen, which, if you haven’t read it, drop what you’re doing now and Go. Read. It. That book is the blueprint for everything that’s come before it and after, and better than whatever the next generation will dream up. I also somehow fell into Y: The Last Man, and didn’t come up for air until I had read every last one (Filmmakers: Jennifer Carpenter is still young enough to play Hero!). That is when I discovered the beautiful mind of Brian K. Vaughan.

Before the holidays this year, I was reading The Mary Sue’s geek gift guide when, lo and behold, they recommend a new comic series by Brian K. Vaughan called Saga. And that, friends, is when I fell down the rabbit hole.

Saga and many other awesome comic book titles are published not by the big two, Marvel and DC, but by the number three comic book publisher, Image Comics. But unlike the big two rivals that we never stop hearing about–especially now that their Greeks vs. Trojans-level war has bled into their own respective cinematic universes–Image gives their creators free reign to let their imaginations go wild. They also allow them to own the rights to their comics and characters, something Marvel and DC would never permit (understandably, since it would be insane to let a single comics writer own Batman or Captain America). Much like the great auteurs of the cinema, this gives these writer/artist pairings the leeway to create original, complex, and fantastical worlds, full of multi-faceted characters of every color, gender, sexual orientation, or creed under the sun–or, you know, the three moons of Endor.

(Calm down, I know Endor doesn’t have three moons. It sort of is a moon. Maybe. The cannon is unclear.)

Image titles have women who equal men in their power, ferocity, and flaws—like in ODY-C, a phantasmagorical re-writing of the Odyssey by gender-switching the characters. People of color who are regularly cover stars—like in the pop fantasia The Wicked + The Divine. Queer characters—like the many trans characters in the dystopia Trees. Female creators allowed to push things to the limit—like in Kelly Sue DeConnick’s new series set in a woman’s prison in outer space, Bitch Planet.

Saga_1_cvr

Take Saga, a space opera with imagination to spare and themes as profound as any play by Shakespeare. Specifically, it references Romeo & Juliet in its story of two lovers from warring civilizations who have found each other despite cultural differences and being force-fed propaganda about the other since birth. But Alana and Marko are only the beginning of the story, which spans across galaxies but always stays with the impromptu family at its heart. It has warrior mommies, TV-headed closeted alien princes with short fuses, a disembowelled ghost nanny, a lie-detector cat, a tree spaceship, and just about the ugliest-looking spider assassin woman your worst nightmares couldn’t dream up. Most of all, it’s the story of two houses, both alike in savagery, who have been fighting so long that they couldn’t stop even if they could see the end of the conflict. But it’s so much more, and artist Fiona Staples jam-packs each frame with such atmosphere it’s as if you’re dreaming her panels, not reading them.

19536001

I also picked up Sex Criminals, a bawdy and hilarious title by their number two go-to guy, Matt Fraction, and artist Chip Zdarsky. The best way to describe it is as some kind of X-rated rom-com noir, with a female lead character who is in charge of her own sexuality and is not shamed for it. If anything, she’s actually more in control and self-aware than her male love interest (no, that is not one enormous typo). The premise is insane (and I won’t spoil it), the artistry is moody and sensual—but best of all, it’s hella funny.
Whether your jam is personal stories or fantastical allegories, space tragedies or pop culture philosophizing, I’m betting there’s something here to tickle your synapses. Diversity. Originality. Author-controlled creative works with no boundaries save the limits of imagination. These are the kinds of stories we’re always begging Hollywood for. Well, Hollywood better get in line.

So, what are you waiting for? Dive in!

Warning: Brain in Hibernation

Friends,

It’s that time of the year. The holidays are (blessedly) over. The deep freeze has set in–a balmy -30C here today. All anyone wants to do is tuck up with a steaming mug of hot chocolate, a snuggly corgi, and a romance novel that’s equal parts smut and angst. Or maybe that’s just me.

All this to say that I know there hasn’t been much new content on the blog lately. There are both good and procrastinaty reasons for this. In the plus column, I’ve started a new book that I’m so excited about, and I want to give it my full attention for at least the first fifty pages or so, until I find my groove. On the procrastination side… Well, see the aforementioned desire to do nothing more than drink cocoa and read smut. 2014 was a relentless year for me and, no matter how I feel about the weather, 2015 came in like a lion. Lots of work (good), lots of personal challenges (that I won’t bore you with).

So for the next couple of months, I’ll aim to get a new post up once every two weeks. If you’re looking for some way to pass the time, my historical M/M novel Like Stars is still available from MLR Press and all fine eBook vendors (had to get at least one shameless plug in there!). In the meantime, enjoy these pictures I took while visiting the magnificent topiary exhibition Mosaicultures 2013 at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. They make me think of springtime, which can only be a good thing!

Resolution for 2015: Be Kind Online

We’ve seen it before, and we’ll definitely see it again: online bullying. Whether it’s a pileup on someone who has committed the grave injustice of defending an unpopular opinion in a reasonable way, shippers of one pairing vs. the shippers of another pairing, blog posts calling someone out for the ‘wrong’ kind of criticism, authors wailing on reviewers and readers, or just plain old meanness, internet comment boards and blogs are full of intolerance. Impatience. Name-calling. Obnoxious behavior. Or the real word for it, bullying.

To be clear, I’m not talking about a situation where corporate, institutional, or celebrity bad behavior is called out, the Amazon vs. Hachettes and the Bill Cosbys and the Fergusons of the world. By all means, keep fighting the power on those fronts. I’m referring to fan on fan, amateur reviewer on amateur reviewer, reader on reader, blogger on blogger (or any variation thereof) hazing for no other reason than dislike of one person’s opinion or preferred pairing. Basically, the wank.

I would guess that the majority of people who spend a lot of time online discussing the books, television, films, music, fandoms, etc., have known moments of introversion and isolation. Have experienced at least some kind of bullying in their life. No matter what your background, race, culture, sexual orientation, or gender, there’s someone out there who’s ready and waiting to take you apart with the cruellest words you’ve ever heard another human being spout. To take everything that you are and dissect it until you feel like a brittle shell of yourself.

I was bullied in high school, though thankfully it got better. But nothing’s perfect, and I still experience moments of real-life prejudice and crippling insecurity. (It’s called being a writer!) There are people in my life who do not have my best interests at heart, and sometimes it’s hard to tell good advice from someone’s agenda. This is why so many of us retreat online, where it’s so much easier to find people who share the same rare obsessions, obscure fandoms, or zeitgeist-y manias as you. Little oases of fun and friendship that encourage the most secret parts of you to bloom.

And why it’s so devastating to see those oases threatened by a few bad weeds. We’ve all seen this happen, either in our own corner of the interwebs or another. Someone decides to assert their ‘authority’. A member of the group, or a subset, are not behaving according to ‘the rules’. They don’t like the right ship. They don’t offer the right kind of criticism. They are responsible for the decline/ruination/corruption of the genre/fandom/critical standards. What they are doing is in every way wrong, and it is an injustice that must be SHOUTED FROM THE ROOFTOPS!! They must be taken down on Twitter, lambasted on Facebook, banned from GoodReads!! They are gaming the system! They are illiterate trolls! No expletive or snarky remark is too good for them! Everyone, everywhere needs to know how horrible they are, so, followers, let’s all gang up on them at the same time, berating and insulting them relentlessly, until they wish they were never born!!!!!

Like I said, bullying. You can pretty it up with a dictionary’s worth of big words or foul it with a gutter’s worth of expletives, but it’s all just bullying.

It’s a new year, and I hope you’ll join me in making a major resolution: be kind online. Let everyone play in the sandbox. Trust me, there’s room, and enough toys to go around. Another thing you can trust: if you can see that someone’s making an ass of themselves, other people can, too. People are generally pretty smart. You don’t need to point fingers or call people names. Or write minutely detailed blog posts taking them down, anonymously. I’m not religious, but even a heathen like me knows that there’s something to that ‘do unto others’ business.

So let’s concentrate on making our online time the best, friendliest, most welcoming it can be. Have some fun, because life is too short. Celebrate the things we love, together. Criticize art in a constructive way, without tearing any fellow readers or fans down. Remember that a personal opinion is just that, personal, and the person stating it has a story all their own. One that might not be that different from yours, if you take the time to listen.

So who’s with me? In 2015, let’s resolve to be kind online (because we all know the powers that be give us enough to complain about without turning on each other), and keep the holiday cheer going throughout the year.

Wishing you a healthy, adventuresome, and thrilling new year,

Selina

Best Characters of 2014 – Books, TV, Film

When you think about a book/film/show that you love, does your mind automatically go to one of the twists of the plot? The setting? The costumes? The descriptions? A line of dialogue? Maybe. But I guarantee the number-one thing your brain clicks to is your favorite character.

Fiction lives or dies by the quality of its characters. If they are well-realized, they win our hearts forever. If they are deeply flawed, we sometimes love them even more. Some are downright dastardly, but that doesn’t matter if they keep us at the edge of our seats. In fiction, the cardinal sin is being boring. Villainy we can endure. It’s mediocrity that disappoints.

Being a pop culture junkie, I thought about doing a typical ‘best of’ list for the blog. I love reading them. I love shouting at their authors even more (from the privacy of my couch). I like the orderliness of them, the time-capsule aspect. But as I was walking my dog this morning, pondering what books or shows would make my list, I kept coming back to the characters that made these books and shows so memorable. Because it always comes back to them.

So, without further ado and in no particular order, here are my 10 most memorable characters in books, TV, and film in 2014.

BOOKS

16128152

-Stephen Day, the Charm of Magpies series by KJ Charles. Such a wealth of compassion, bravery, and determination should always come in such an adorably small ginger package.

-David Lauriston, the Enlightenment trilogy by Joanna Chambers. You will notice that I tend to favor the harried, beleaguered, crusader-for-justice type (see above, and below). This lovely gentleman is no exception.

-Percival Endicott Whyborne, the Whyborne & Griffin books by Jordan L. Hawk. It came down to a photo finish between the two protagonists of this series because I love them both so much. I resisted it being Whyborne because I see so much of myself in him, especially in the first two books of the series. So many of the trials in his life are trials in mine, and there is a definite catharsis in watching him overcome them in ways I can’t (or haven’t been able to). But in the end, that is the exact reason why I love him: he teaches me something about myself that is hard to accept. And so Whyborne beats Griffin by a nose.

-Nicholas Goring, the Butterfly Hunters series by Julie Bozza. The man is a jewel that cuts so deep. His outlook on life is one we should all emulate. I never felt happier this year than reading about the world through his eyes.

-Aaron Seavers, Fever Pitch by Heidi Cullinan. How could I not love a character trying to come to grips with both the music inside him and his attraction to men? This is also likely the result of my current Grant Gustin obsession (see: the TV section).

-Rabbit Hatmaker, Bellweather Rhapsody by Kate Racculia. Another musical protégé confused about his sexuality. It’s getting to be a theme.

-Antoinette Conway, The Secret Place by Tana French. Not a lot of women on this list, alas, probably due to the fact that I mostly read M/M. But Conway is a blunt-force trauma of a woman, a bulldog of a detective, and brazen enough to outman every XY chromosome on this list.

-Cornelius Franklin, Highfell Grimoires by Langley Hyde. A scientists and sort-of conjurer in horrible circumstances who nevertheless has compassion enough to help those in even worse circumstances.

-Julia Wicker, The Magician King by Lev Grossman. A true female anti-heroine with terrific aspirations whose fearlessness and indomitability never failed to inspire.

-Christine, the Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk. She. Is. Awesome. (Yes, I cheated.)

TELEVISION

(For any show that aired a new season during this calendar year.)

110_0421_Fargo_CL.jpg

-Molly Solverson, Fargo. Because everyone underestimated her, but she never gave up.

-Felix Dawkins, Orphan Black. Yes, the clones, Tatiana Maslany, I know. I agree. But I adore Felix. He’s the one I’ll still watch for if it turns to shit.

-Sherlock, Sherlock. Best best man’s speech ever.

-Alison Bailey, The Affair. Both versions of this character break my heart.

-Vanessa Ives, Penny Dreadful. She isn’t ‘the girl’ in a show full of showy male parts. She is the Queen who has every male character on his knees.

-Rustin Cohle, True Detective. Time may be a flat circle, but this guy is one well-rounded, poetic, devastating sumbitch.

-Brienne of Tarth, Game of Thrones. Biggest badass in the most badass fight scene of the year.

-Danny Pink, Doctor Who. Worst use of a great character. I don’t love Clara, but I love how he loved her.

-Barry Allen, The Flash and Arrow. See aforementioned Grant Gustin obsession. This is why.

-Alicia Florrick, The Good Wife. On a show full of colorful and complex characters, she will always be the most fascinating to watch. I actually find myself thinking, “Be more like Alicia Florrick.” That is a good thing.

FILM

guardians-sarah-01aug14

(Not a great year for women in film. I want there to be more on this list. Blame Hollywood misogyny.)

-Dido Elizabeth Belle, Belle. Grace and poise in a world where everyone was against her.

-Peter “Star Lord” Quill, Gamora, Rocket Racoon, Groot, and Drax, Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, all of them. Do I really have to explain?

-Lou Bloom, Nightcrawler. Terrifying, but I can’t stop watching.

-Amy Dunne, Gone Girl. A-mazing.

-Gustave H., The Grand Budapest Hotel. The kind of rogue you wish was in your life.

-Frank, Frank. Of the inferior Joy Division.

-Mike, Birdman. A method asshole for the ages.

-Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Cap and Bucky who?

-Ivan Locke, Locke. Only character on screen for the entire length of the movie. Never, ever boring. Tom Hardy, you are a god.

-Terence Fletcher, Whiplash. Bad teachers make great characters.

A very happy New Year to you all! Here’s to even more diversity and better representation in 2015!

Five Things I’m Loving Right Now

This post is an act of thievery. I fully confess the crime. One of the things I look forward to seeing on my reader the most is one of Josh Lanyon’s occasional “Five Things I Love/Am Grateful For” posts (read the latest here), because I am all about sharing the love. I love that he shares his loves, and I love to share my loves. So get ready! (And apologies to Josh for the pick-pocketing.)

I am, to put it mildly, an enthusiastic person when I latch on to something great. I tell everyone I know about it (my friends can attest to this; I usually tell them at least five times each). I shout it from the rooftops. When I’m enamored by a person, place, or thing, I am like a cheerleader punch-drunk on pep and a gallon of Red Bull.

But.

These infatuations of mine usually have a shelf life. Exclusivity + frequency – availability / distraction X work overload, or something. This is not to say that I stop loving these things–far from it–but that my enthusiasm powers down enough to let something else shove a spoke into the hamster wheel that is my brain. All this to say that, every so often on this blog, I’ll write a post about some things that I love. But I’m giving it a little twist so that the lovely Mr. Lanyon doesn’t sue (please don’t, I’m a writer. I literally have some sunflower seeds and a 15-year-old TV to my name), in that these are five things I’m loving right now. As in, if you see me this time next week, I’ll still like them. But I (probably) won’t go full-on Tracy Flick on your ass.

So, without further ado, here are Five Things I’m Loving Right Now:

1. It seems fitting to get the party started with the author who inspired it all. One of the first M/M anthologies I ever read was His For The Holidays, because I am a sucker for holiday-themed romance at Christmas time. I am normally one of the biggest bah-humbugers of all time, so the fact that I love nothing more during my few late-December days off than to cozy up with a cuppa and a smutty Christmas tale confounds me. But it’s truly one of my great loves of the season. I quickly hunted down Men Under the Mistletoe for the same reason. But the past few Christmases, there haven’t been such anthologies–or maybe just not of that caliber.

This year, Santa has been especially nice because this Sunday, the anthology Comfort and Joy is being released. It features the estimable Mr. Lanyon, as well as my faves Harper Fox, Joanna Chambers, and L.B. Gregg. Four presents for the price of one! If I read one a week, it’ll be like a literary advent calendar. But who am I kidding? I’m waiting for my Boxing Day mug of chai.

2. The Flash/Arrow crossover episodes, “Flash Vs. Arrow” and “The Brave and the Bold”.

The-Flash-Arrow-crossover-fight

Best crossover in TV history. Exciting, angsty, and funny as hell, featuring hot guys in tight leather, science-girl power, scintillating sidekicks, formidable foes, and some touching, thrilling writing. If you’re not watching these shows, binge from the start!

3. London theater on demand. I thought it was a dream come true when I could go to my local cinema and see productions by the National Theatre live, like the incredible version of Frankenstein Danny Boyle directed, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller. Now there’s a web site that has a library of older productions you, like me, might have missed because… Oh, you live thousands of miles away and barely get a vacation every two years, if you’re lucky. Well, lady fortune has whammied you today, my theater-loving friends, because you can now watch “the best of British theater” in your jammies! Just subscribe to Digital Theatre, and let the streaming begin! It does cost a wee little something… but a lot less than a trip to London and a ticket, even from the half-price booth in Leicester Square.

4. This Medieval Princess Bathrobe from Think Geek. Because don’t we all want to pretend we’re Galadriel every once in a while?

5. I won’t often use this space to self-promote or talk about personal things, since it’s meant to be an exercise in fun, but I have just put out a new book and, as a consequence, I’ve had to confront some experiences that I’d been dreading for months. Namely, the reaction of my friends and family when they discovered I write M/M, and exactly what that means. I think most bookish introvert types like myself can relate to the fact that few of our online adventures spill into the real world, especially if you have a family that has very rigid/conservative ideas about things (I don’t mean that in the political sense). The point of it all is that it’s your private play time (though of course a lot of good can be done in the process) and people in your real life don’t know that much, if anything, about it. This was the case for me.

But when you publish a book, well, how can you keep that a secret? Especially from the people who love you. When I decided to focus on writing M/M, I knew that one day I would no longer be able to hide behind my computer. That actual living, breathing people I talk to on a regular basis would learn about this side-profession of mine, and I’d have to talk to them about it in the flesh. I should mention that I am not in any way ashamed of what I do. But I confess I was a bit nervous about how this all would play out.

Turns out, I didn’t need to be. My uncle joked that he wanted me to start writing M/F/F and my sister read some of the sex scenes to her friend over the phone. When I tried to hedge by saying that I know it’s weird, my sister corrected me and said it’s not. My mom read the book in two days and loved it. Something that had me quaking in my boots turned out to be no trouble at all, and I am so very grateful for that.

Hopefully you can find something in there to inspire you!

Selina 😀

Author Spotlight: NJ Nielsen!

Friends, today it’s my great pleasure to introduce fellow M/M author NJ Nielsen. Not only is she a prolific writer, but she devotes the entire run-up to Christmas to promoting her fellow authors on her web site. Talk about giving back to your community! She was kind enough to feature me a few days ago–check out my post on Edwardian Christmases here. But this post is all about NJ and her new book, Moon Runners 1: Heart-Mate Mine!

(FP) MR 2 - Heart-mate, Mine!

BUY HERE: Fireborn Press // Amazon

BLURB:

Two lives–One destiny. When fate decides two people belong together, nothing can stand in its way. Liam Kantry and Carlo Bruenelli find themselves caught up in the madness of Christmas and taking care of a child as they discover the meaning of being true heart-mates.

Liam Kantry wants to be with the man he has loved his whole life, yet incessant gossip and innuendos have labelled him the pack whore—a point he has never disputed. Now the rumours have come back to bite him in the arse.

Carlo Bruenelli is waiting for his heart-mate; he’s one of the pack who truly believes they really do exist. In his heart he wants it to be his best friend, only problem is he knows Liam doesn’t believe in heart-mates. What will it take to change Liam’s mind? And should he even try?

Christmas is drawing near, and between snowball fights and the inter-pack gathering, Liam and Carlo find themselves caught up in the excitement and obsessing over what their future holds. Especially when a small child forms a bond with them. They learn there is more out there than they ever dreamt was possible.

Can Liam and Carlo work around the newness of their own mating to protect someone who needs it most?

CONTENT ADVISORY: This work is a significantly expanded (almost tripled in length), re-edited re-release title.

EXCERPT:

Everyone had a fear, and Carlo’s was probably no different to anyone else’s. His fear involved running into the love of his life, Liam Kantry, and being ignored completely. Liam often starred in Carlo’s nightly dreams of who his heart-mate should look like, yet sadly Liam only ever looked at him like an annoying, dorky, younger brother–a brother you didn’t want hanging around all the time. Usually, it was hard to avoid him since they belonged to the same pack. Thoughts like these had been plaguing him for the last month or so leading up to this special week.

The Moon Runner Pack had been chosen to host the inter-pack meet-and-greet on their lands where guests from other packs would be coming in hope of finding a mate. Most people didn’t believe in heart-mates. Carlo was truly one of the few in the pack who actually believed heart-mates existed. Somewhere out there’s the perfect person looking for me. A tingle of excitement surged through him at the mere possibility of it being true. I’m twenty-one. I’m finally old enough to attend the party. Let’s hope he’s here and just as eager to meet me. Wish it could be Liam, but wouldn’t we have known by now if we were? Hopefully Christmas Day I’ll have pushed aside my crush on Liam Kantry and I’ll know whether or not my heart-mate is out there searching for me as well—that is, if he even comes to the gathering. My luck, he won’t even bother turning up.

Man, he hoped he was wrong and his heart-mate existed in the here and now, waiting to meet him as well. Never once had he doubted that his future mate would be a male. Fate wouldn’t be so cruel to pair him with a woman he could never really love. Being mated to a female wouldn’t be fair to either of them. If it came down to his mate being someone who wasn’t male, he’d simply explain everything to her and let her find someone else she could be happy with. Carlo had even heard that this year there were packs coming to attend from even farther afield than usual. This gathering also became the time new alliances were made between packs, where packs could ask another for help in any way. Bloodshed was frowned upon at these gatherings, but sometimes it became unavoidable—or so he’d been told.

The alpha had asked him, because it was his first time, to become involved this year by being seen at the meeting hall, not hiding away from the pack like he usually did. Apparently all members of the pack who had come of age and were eligible to attend were asked to help out. So here he was now, wet as all get-go—because he’d only moments before slipped and landed in a puddle as he tried to dodge a car on the street outside the hall. Dripping wet, he grumbled as he walked through the falling snow toward the last place he wanted to be—the pack town hall. Carlo hoped to avoid everything until the starting ceremony itself, but Darian and the alpha had nixed that thought early on. The plain truth was he didn’t want to have to be anywhere he’d have to bear witness to Liam flirting with other people. Carlo was a coward, and he knew it. He wasn’t disputing the fact at all. As he neared the building, the noise coming from within sounded muted, but still loud in a raucous kind of way.

Carlo waved to a couple leaving the crowded room as he entered. He didn’t know them, but he thought it would be a polite and friendly gesture to the wolves who’d be arriving to stay with the Moon Runner pack over the next few days. He didn’t even complain much when Sally Anne Meyers, the alpha’s younger sister, made him strip out of his outer layers before she allowed him to step foot inside the door.

She’d joked, “If you were smarter, you’d strip in time to the music and make yourself a little money on the side.” Her laughter sounded light, and Carlo knew she wasn’t being mean. Being twenty-one herself, she probably also found herself being forced to be sociable. Unlike him, Sally Anne actually liked being the centre of attention, especially if it garnered the interest of a certain pack member. According to Marcus, the pack gossip, Sally Anne had set her sights on Wade Michelson this year. She’d chosen him as her mate and she’d do anything to get what she wanted.

“The only problem is they’d make me pay the money back with interest once they saw me naked,” he replied, snickering before he handed her the wet clothes.

“Go sit by the fire and I’ll call your mum to bring you some dry clothes. We wouldn’t want all your lovely bits and pieces to fall off, now would we?”

What the fuck? Is she flirting with me? “Are you trying to get my arse beat? If you keep that talk up, you’ll make Wade crazy jealous and he’ll come after me.”

“Hah! That big galoot wouldn’t know which end faced up if someone didn’t tell him.” There seemed to be no heat in her words.

“I thought you were determined to be his mate?” Carlo asked, curious as he saw the glint of something in her eye.

She waved him away. “He’s mine. He just doesn’t know it yet. His days of sleeping around are over.” She sniffed haughtily then burst out laughing. “Go on. Go warm up and I’ll get you some dry clothes. I saw Liam in here earlier–not sure if he’s still here though.”

He gave her one last smile before he did as told. “Thank you.” He wasn’t sure if he thanked her for calling his mum or for letting him know Liam Kantry sat in the hall talking with friends.

The sounds of carols playing through the speakers, combined with happy laughter ringing out were enough to get even the most miserable person into the Christmas spirit. The interior walls had been transformed from their usual drab wooden bareness to having an array of colours splashed across them. The effect was kind of stunning. Whoever had decorated this year had taste.

With all the festivities going on around him, Carlo couldn’t have stopped smiling even if he’d wanted to. He actually loved this time of year–always had. The fact remained he loved everything about Christmas, from the addictive aroma of the baked goods to the scent of the pine trees filling the air, but most of all he loved the feeling of family and everyone being together.

His love of everything Christmas started the year his father gave him his very own sled. That year he’d met Liam Kantry for the first time. He’d also met Liam’s brothers Marcus and Theo. They’d taken turns sharing his sled while riding down the hills out on the back of the pack lands. The day seemed to rush by, none of them coming in until August Kantry, the boys’ father, had come looking for them. On the way home, he’d given them all a lecture on what were safe and unsafe times to stay out playing when their parents were sitting at home and waiting for them.

Christmas was just around the corner and his family was getting ready to celebrate in style. His mother was known by many as a baking fiend when it came to roasts, but no one in the pack came even close to beating Mary Kantry when it came to baking Christmas goodies. She had become a legend among the pack, especially for her Christmas bread. Hell, even just the thought of it had Carlo’s mouth watering. His thoughts came back to the present when he heard an all too familiar voice. Oh great, so Liam really is still here—yippee… not!

Put up your zucs!!

After all the book promo, I thought we could all do with a little palate-cleanser (and my brain a little down time after writing all those blog posts!). It’s been a while since I posted some recipes, and the focus today is on one of my favorite ingredients: zucchini! I find people usually fall into either the love or the hate camp with this vegetable, and I am squarely in the love. Last summer, my brother-in-law decided to grow up some monster veggies in his garden. This prime specimen was a result:

I managed to make six different meals from that bad boy, who I nicknamed Fassy, for obvious reasons. Fassy was a bit of a mess to deal with, but he fed me well. Here are two of the recipes I tried for the first time with him. Bonus: they are both vegetarian!

The first is zucchini lasagna. There is really no trick to this. You just substitute thick slices of zucchini–a mandolin is your friend–for the noodles, then layer with whatever sauce/cheese combo strikes your fancy. You can add in other ingredients as well, like sausage or mushrooms. Bake for 40 mins at 375F. Easy-peasy! Mine turned out like this:

The next recipe tested Fassy’s longevity a bit–har, har–since it’s a bit tricky to get the amount of water right depending on your stove. I’ve made it three times now, and I think I’ve licked it (er, off the plate). If you’re ever in the mood for homemade mac and cheese, try this on instead. It’s marginally healthier (not) and ridiculously delicious. It also works well as a side or a main. Thanks to Katy from Baking, Domesticity, and All Things Mini for inventing it!

Cheesy Zucchini Orzo

Makes 4 servings

A few notes: If you’re a heat seeker, try adding red pepper flakes or a dash of buffalo sauce for an extra kick. And, this reheats wonderfully if you can manage not to clear out the pan on the first round!

1 tablespoon Olive Oil
1 cup Orzo
1 clove Garlic, minced
Salt
Ground black pepper
1 medium Zucchini, grated (about 2 cups)
1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar Cheese
Milk [Selina’s note – I never needed milk when I made this.]

In a large skillet over medium heat, toss orzo and garlic with oil until fragrant. Add 2 1/2 cups of water [Selina’s note: Personally, I found this to be too much water. I used 2 cups and a splash, and it was perfect. But it will depend on your stove.] and 1/2 teaspoon salt and bring to boil. Reduce to a simmer and, stirring occasionally so that orzo does not stick to the bottom of pan, cook pasta until al dente and liquid has almost completely evaporated. Stir in zucchini until warmed through. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted. If needed, add a splash or two of milk to achieve extra creamy texture. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

I definitely recommend going for the chili option, and using the oldest cheddar possible. This makes it more expensive, but ups the cheese factor to Mach 10. And if there’s one thing in this world I find more satisfying than Fassy (real-life or veggie versions), it’s cheese. Though zucchini is in my top ten for sure.

Enjoy!

Like Stars Out Now!!

Friends,

Once upon a time, on a sun-drenched balcony in Nicaragua, on what for them was considered a ‘cool’ day, I decided I couldn’t dither with this book idea any longer and started to write Like Stars. I still have those first sweat-mired pages, though their scribblings little resemble the actual first chapter of the book (mostly because my handwriting, then as now, is illegible). Still, the architecture is there. A hooded man rides through the dulcet town of Haversham. Dr. Wesley Douglas thinks he’s seeing a ghost–the ghost of his long-dead lover–and is shocked to the core. The game, as they say, is afoot.

That was hardly the beginning of my journey as a writer, and the publication of the book is hardly the end, but for me, it was the moment I got serious about living my dream. It was the moment that led to today, one of the best days of my life.

Like Stars is on sale now!

I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of all my family and friends, my writing group, the amazing staff at MLR Press, especially Laura, Kris, and my editor Jen, and all of the incredibly dedicated bloggers who helped me organize the tour and were so generous with their time: JJ, Marc, Evaine, Dani, Mark, Brandilyn, and Ëresse.

What started so many years ago is now yours to enjoy. I hope you end up loving Wesley and Nathaniel as much as I do.

Much love,
Selina 😀

Like Stars Blog Tour Schedule!

Beautiful Friends,

*Deep breath.* So, we are less than a week away from the start of the Like Stars Blog Tour and two weeks away from the release of Like Stars! My 14-year-old self can’t believe I just typed those words. My XX-year-old self would like to reassure you that this is the second-to-last post about the book unless something mega happens. But if you can’t promo your book on your own blog, where can you promo it, right? Well, see below. All that to say, thank you for your patience.

But I do think that the posts I’ve written for the blog tour will be of interest to you, and I hope that you’ll learn a little more about the book, about me, and about some of the things that obsess and confound me along the way. Also, a brief programming note to say that links will be updated to the actual posts once they are on the respective web sites. So, without further ado, here is the schedule:

Nov. 7th – Joyfully Jay hosts a discussion of the Mysterious Stranger trope

Nov. 10th – I’m at Rainbow Gold Reviews asking: When is a comet not a comet? (Kind of a trick question, this)

Nov. 11th – The ladies of Coffee and Porn host an introduction to the ladies of Like Stars

-And the kind folks at Love Bytes let me talk about Inspiration

Nov. 12th – How can you miss a post entitled the Eroticism of Edwardian fashion at Sinfully Sexy Books, with visuals?

-The penultimate stop is a discussion of Perspective at Prism Book Alliance

Nov. 13th – At the lovely Eressë’s Live Journal, the tour concludes with a post about the tale of Martin Guerre on which the book is based.

A huge thank you to everyone who so generously agreed to host this tour! There will be giveaways at every single stop on the tour, so don’t miss out! 😀
